Custom Fencing
What is Custom Fencing?
Custom fencing is fencing designed around your property rather than picked off a shelf. Standard panels come in fixed sizes and a handful of styles, which suits some gardens but rarely makes the most of a space you've invested in. A bespoke fence starts with how you want your garden to look and work, and we build it to suit. That might be a contemporary horizontal slatted fence to frame a new porcelain patio, hit-and-miss fencing that lets air flow through while keeping things private, or a decorative screen to hide bins, oil tanks or a hot tub. We also make matching bespoke garden gates and trellis tops, and build fencing that follows awkward angles or sloping ground. Because every element is cut and fitted on site, we can choose the timber, board width, gap spacing and height to get exactly the finish you want, or use low-maintenance composite boards if you'd rather never stain a fence again. At J&J Contractors, we've built custom fencing for modern new-builds and character homes across Exeter, Topsham and Sidmouth, always with the same focus on solid posts and a neat finish. It's the kind of detail that turns a plain boundary into a real feature of your garden.

When to Choose Custom Fencing?
Custom fencing comes into its own when standard options simply won't fit or won't look right. If you're redesigning your outdoor space with a new patio, sleeper beds or fresh turf, an off-the-shelf panel fence can let the whole project down, while a bespoke design ties everything together. It's also the answer for awkward gardens. Many homes in Exeter and Crediton have steep or stepped plots, irregular boundaries or tight corners where panels would leave gaps or ugly cuts. Custom fencing can follow the ground, wrap around corners and fill odd lengths neatly. Some homeowners need a specific function, such as a privacy screen around a seating area, a windbreak for a coastal garden in Exmouth or Teignmouth, or a fence high enough to stop a determined dog without making the garden feel like a fortress. Others simply want something that stands out from every other fence on the street. If you have a clear picture of what you want but can't find it in a fencing catalogue, or you're not sure what's possible, that's exactly when a custom fencing design makes sense. We'll talk through ideas with you and suggest what will look best and last longest in your setting.

What is Required for Custom Fencing?
Every custom fencing project starts with a conversation. During your free site visit, we'll measure up, look at the ground and talk through styles, materials and budget. We'll also check practical points like who owns the boundary, how much wind the site gets and whether your plans need planning permission. In most cases fences up to 2 metres high don't, but the limit drops to 1 metre beside a road, and different rules apply to listed homes. Material choice makes a big difference. Pressure-treated softwood is great value, hardwood and thermally modified timber give a premium finish, and composite boards offer a low-maintenance option that won't need staining. We'll explain the pros and cons of each so you can decide with confidence. Once the design is agreed, we set posts in concrete for a strong base, then build the fence board by board, checking levels and gaps as we go so the finished result is crisp and consistent. Gates, lighting and built-in planters can all be part of the design. Like all our work across Newton Abbot, Torquay and the rest of South Devon, your custom fencing is backed by our 10-year written guarantee. Call 07476 554105 to start planning yours.
