Plastering & Skimming
What are Plastering and Skimming?
Plastering is the process of applying a smooth, durable finish to walls and ceilings, ready for painting or decorating. Skimming, sometimes called a skim coat, is a thin layer of finishing plaster, usually just a few millimetres thick, applied over existing plaster or plasterboard to create a perfectly smooth, even surface. Full plastering goes further, removing old, damaged or blown plaster and replacing it with new backing and finishing coats to rebuild the wall from scratch. Most modern homes use gypsum plasters, which give a hard, smooth finish and dry relatively quickly. Older properties built with solid stone, cob or brick walls often need breathable lime plaster, which allows moisture to escape and helps prevent damp problems. At J&J Contractors, we provide plastering and skimming across Exeter, Topsham, Crediton and Tiverton, as well as Exmouth, Sidmouth, Newton Abbot and Torbay. Jay learned his trade from an old-school master craftsman, and that attention to detail shows in every wall and ceiling we finish. Whether you need a single wall skimmed after removing wallpaper, a full room replastered or careful restoration work in a period home, we'll leave you with a flawless surface and a clean, tidy room.

When to Choose Plastering or Skimming?
Plastering or skimming is needed whenever your walls or ceilings are no longer smooth, sound or ready to decorate. Common signs include cracks, bumps and uneven patches, plaster that sounds hollow when tapped or crumbles away, and walls left damaged after wallpaper has been stripped. Old textured ceilings, such as Artex, are often skimmed over to give a modern, flat finish, although we'll always recommend testing older textured coatings for asbestos first. Plastering is also a key part of most renovations. If you're having electrical rewiring, new plumbing, a kitchen or bathroom fit, or walls knocked through, the plasterwork will need repairing or renewing before decorating. New plasterboard in extensions and loft conversions needs skimming to create a seamless finish. Period properties across Exeter, Topsham and Crediton often have tired or damaged lime plaster that needs sympathetic repair, while damp problems in older homes in Tiverton and Teignmouth can leave plaster salt-stained and crumbling, needing removal and replastering once the cause of the damp has been fixed. If you're preparing a home for sale or rent, freshly skimmed and painted walls make an enormous difference to how a property looks and photographs.

What is Required for Plastering and Skimming?
Great plastering is as much about preparation as it is about the finish. At your free site visit, we'll check the condition of your walls and ceilings, identify any damp, cracking or loose plaster and recommend whether skimming or full replastering is the right approach. In older homes, we'll also advise whether lime plaster is needed to keep solid walls breathable. Before work starts, we protect your floors, furniture and fittings with dust sheets and masking. Loose or blown plaster is hacked off, cracks are taped and surfaces are prepared with the right bonding agent or primer so the new plaster adheres properly. For skimming, the finishing coat is applied in two thin layers and trowelled to a smooth, glass-like finish, while full plastering involves backing coats before the final skim. New plaster needs time to dry before decorating, usually a few days for a skim and longer for thicker coats, and the first coat of paint should be a diluted mist coat so it soaks in and grips properly. We clean up thoroughly at the end of every day, so your home stays liveable. All plastering and skimming across Exeter, Dawlish, Paignton, Brixham, Cullompton and South Devon is backed by our 10-year written guarantee. Call 07476 554105 for a free quote.
