Internal Wall Insulation
What is Internal Wall Insulation?
Internal wall insulation, often called IWI, is a way of insulating the inside face of your external walls. It's designed mainly for homes with solid walls, which have no cavity to fill and lose heat far faster than modern cavity walls. The process involves fixing insulation boards, or a stud frame filled with insulation, to the inside of the walls, then finishing with plasterboard and a skim coat so the room is ready to decorate. Once complete, the walls look just like normal walls, but they're warmer to the touch and hold the heat in far better. There are different systems to suit different buildings. Rigid insulated plasterboards give good performance with minimal loss of space, while breathable systems using wood fibre or similar materials are often better for older stone and cob homes, as they allow moisture to move through the wall and reduce the risk of damp. At J&J Contractors, we install internal wall insulation across Exeter, Topsham, Crediton and Tiverton, as well as Exmouth, Sidmouth, Newton Abbot and Torbay. As plasterers and decorators too, we handle the whole job, from stripping and preparing the walls to the final coat of paint.

When to Choose Internal Wall Insulation?
Internal wall insulation is worth considering if you live in a home with solid walls and struggle to keep it warm. Most houses built before the 1920s have solid walls, including many Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Exeter, Georgian and Regency homes in Topsham and Sidmouth, and traditional stone and cob cottages around Crediton and Tiverton. These homes can lose a large share of their heat through the walls, leading to cold rooms, high energy bills and a heating system that's always working hard. If your external walls feel cold to the touch in winter, or you suffer from condensation and mould on outside walls, insulation can help by keeping the inner surface warmer. Internal insulation is often the best option where external insulation isn't possible or appropriate, such as in conservation areas, on terraced streets, or on homes with attractive stone or brick frontages you want to preserve. It can also be done room by room, so it's ideal when you're already renovating, replastering or redecorating a particular room. If you want to improve your home's energy efficiency and EPC rating, or you're preparing a property for rental, internal wall insulation can make a significant difference to comfort and running costs.

What is Required for Internal Wall Insulation?
Internal wall insulation needs careful planning to get the benefits without creating new problems. At your free visit, we'll look at your walls, check for damp and ventilation issues, and recommend the right system for your home. Any existing damp must be fixed first, and in older solid-walled homes we'll often recommend breathable insulation to avoid trapping moisture inside the wall. We'll also explain how much room space you'll lose, which depends on the system, and talk through radiators, sockets, skirting and window reveals that will need moving or adapting. Building Regulations can apply to wall insulation work, and listed buildings or homes in conservation areas may need extra consent, so we'll advise you on what applies before work starts. On site, we protect your room, remove skirting, fittings and loose plaster, and prepare the walls. Insulation boards or a frame are fixed securely, with careful detailing around windows, floors and ceilings to avoid cold spots, and a vapour control layer where the system requires it. Finally, the walls are boarded, skimmed and left ready to decorate, with fittings replaced. All internal wall insulation across Exeter, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Paignton, Cullompton and South Devon is backed by our 10-year written guarantee. Call 07476 554105 for a free quote.
