What are Porcelain Patios?
A porcelain patio is made from outdoor porcelain paving, a dense, kiln-fired slab designed specifically for gardens. Typically 20mm thick, outdoor porcelain is incredibly hard-wearing and absorbs almost no water, which means it resists staining, moss, algae and frost far better than most other paving. It comes in a huge range of finishes, from clean modern greys and charcoals to convincing stone and wood effects, so you can achieve almost any look without the upkeep that natural materials need. Because each slab is precisely sized, porcelain creates crisp, uniform lines and narrow joints, giving a contemporary, high-end finish that pairs perfectly with bi-fold doors and modern extensions. Quality outdoor porcelain also has a textured, slip-resistant surface, so it stays safe underfoot even in wet weather. At J&J Contractors, we lay porcelain patios across Exeter, Exmouth and Topsham, as well as Torquay, Paignton and Newton Abbot. Porcelain has become the most popular choice for new patios in the UK, and it's easy to see why: once it's down, a quick sweep and wash is all it needs to keep looking like new for years to come.

When to Choose Porcelain?
A porcelain patio makes sense when you want a stylish outdoor space that won't take up your weekends with maintenance. If you're tired of jet-washing green algae off old slabs every spring, or of resealing natural stone, porcelain is the low-effort alternative. It's especially popular with homeowners who've just built an extension or fitted bi-fold doors, as indoor-outdoor porcelain in matching tones can make the kitchen and patio feel like one continuous space. Its resistance to staining makes it ideal for families and for anyone who loves a barbecue or entertaining, as spills from food, wine and oil wipe away easily. Shady gardens, which are common in tightly packed parts of Exeter and on north-facing plots in Teignmouth and Dawlish, are where porcelain really shines, because it doesn't encourage the moss and algae that thrive on porous stone. Coastal homes in Sidmouth, Brixham and Exmouth benefit too, as porcelain shrugs off salt spray and wind-driven rain. If your current patio is cracked, uneven or simply looks tired and dated, upgrading to porcelain gives you a fresh, modern finish that adds instant appeal to your home and garden.

What is Required for Porcelain Installation?
Porcelain is a premium product, and it needs a specialist installation to match. Because it doesn't absorb water, it won't bond to standard mortar on its own, so every slab must be coated with a bonding primer before being laid on a full mortar bed. Cutting also requires diamond blades and care to avoid chipping. After a free site visit, we'll measure the space, check levels and drainage, and help you choose a colour, finish and layout. Installed porcelain patios in the UK typically cost around £120 to £180 per square metre, as laying porcelain takes a little longer than natural stone, and we'll give you a clear, itemised quote. On site, we excavate and lay a compacted sub-base, then prime and bed each slab, keeping joints tight and even with a consistent fall so rainwater drains away. Next to the house, the patio sits at least 150mm below the damp proof course, with a drainage channel where needed. Joints are filled with a specialist porcelain jointing compound for a clean, durable finish. Every porcelain patio we lay across Exeter, Crediton, Tiverton, Cullompton and South Devon is backed by our 10-year written guarantee. Call 07476 554105 for your free quote.
