Block Paving Driveways
What are Block Paving Driveways?
A block paving driveway is made from individual concrete or clay blocks laid tightly together in a pattern, on a bed of sharp sand over a compacted sub-base. The joints are filled with kiln-dried sand, which locks the blocks together into a strong, flexible surface that can carry the weight of everyday cars and vans. Block paving is one of the most popular driveway choices in the UK because it combines good looks with real durability. There's a huge range of colours, textures and block sizes, from traditional brindle and red to modern charcoal, silver and tumbled finishes, and they can be laid in herringbone, basketweave or stretcher bond, with contrasting borders and features to suit your home. One big advantage is that individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if needed, for example to repair a sunken area or reach services underneath, without leaving an obvious patch. Permeable block paving is also available, allowing water to drain through the joints for SuDS-compliant front driveways. At J&J Contractors, we install block paving driveways across Exeter, Topsham, Crediton and Cullompton, as well as Exmouth, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Paignton, building each one on a properly engineered base for a finish that lasts.

When to Choose Block Paving?
Block paving is the right choice when you want a classic, hard-wearing driveway with plenty of design options. If your current concrete or tarmac drive is cracked, patched and tired-looking, block paving offers a smart upgrade that transforms the front of your home, especially paired with a new front boundary fence. It's also ideal for creating new off-road parking or widening an existing drive, especially on busy streets around Exeter, Torquay and Paignton where on-street parking is at a premium. Block paving suits a wide range of properties, from 1930s semis and modern new-builds to larger detached homes, and the choice of colours and patterns means it can be matched to brickwork, render and roof tiles. Families often like it because it's tough enough for bikes, scooters and play as well as cars. If you already have block paving that has sunk, spread or become full of weeds and moss, it may need to be lifted and relaid on a new base, as these problems usually come from a poor sub-base or failed edging. And if surface water runs off your current drive onto the road or towards your house, a permeable block paving driveway can help solve drainage problems while meeting the planning rules for front gardens.

What is Required for Block Paving Driveway Installation?
Good block paving starts with groundwork you'll never see. At your free site visit, we'll measure the area, check levels and drainage, and help you choose blocks, colours, patterns and borders. If you're paving more than 5 square metres of a front garden with standard block paving, the water must drain to a lawn, border or soakaway, or you'll need planning permission, so we often recommend permeable block paving to keep things simple. On site, we excavate to the correct depth for a domestic driveway and lay a well-compacted sub-base in layers. Edge restraints are set in concrete to stop the blocks spreading, which is one of the most common causes of failure. We lay a screeded bed of sharp sand, then place each block by hand in your chosen pattern, cutting neatly around edges, drains and features. The surface is compacted with a plate compactor and kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints to lock everything together. Drainage channels are added where needed to carry water away from your home and garage. We leave the site clean and tidy, and every block paving driveway across Exeter, Sidmouth, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Brixham and Tiverton is backed by our 10-year written guarantee.
